There are different arrangements for children starting our school for the first time and for children starting at a later date.

As a school, we follow the local authority’s admissions procedures which can be found at: www.newham.gov.uk/Pages/Services/Admissions-primary-school.aspx.

Nursery admissions

As a school we hold our own records for admission to the nursery. We will accept children’s names on a completed application form for the nursery waiting list, from their second birthday. Once your child is on our waiting list, we cannot guarantee you a place but we do try to offer all children at least three terms in the nursery before entry into school.

Normally, in the summer term before the children’s planned start in September (or earlier if available), the school will offer places according to the local authority’s admission procedures and will contact parents/carers accordingly.

The offer for your child will be a half day session, either morning or afternoon. Please contact the school office for an application form.

30 hours free nursery education and childcare for working families
We are delighted that the school are able to offer a small number of 30 hour places to some of our families.

If you are interested in a place and are eligible to apply, please contact the school office for more details. Please note that there will be a small charge per day to cover the lunchtime and any lunch provided.

How we offer places in the nursery

Where there are more applicants than places available, the school’s Governing Body must apply their over subscription criteria to determine which children should be offered a place. The school will place all applications in a rank order based on their priority group and home to school distance tie break within each group:

Children with assessed special educational needs will be given priority.
Children in the care of the local authority (Looked After Children).
Children who will get one term in nursery before starting primary school.
Children who will get two terms in nursery and so on.

In each age group, we will admit children in the following order:

1. Children who live locally and have a brother or sister at the school.

2. Children who live locally but do not have a brother or sister at the school.

3. Children who live elsewhere in Newham and have a brother or sister at the school.

4. Children who live elsewhere in Newham.

Starting School for the first time – Reception Class

In Newham, any child whose 4th birthday falls between 1st September and 31st August will be entitled to start school full time in reception at the beginning of the academic year. To register your child at our school, please contact the Local Authority or your nursery school in the September before your child’s fourth birthday for an information booklet and application form.

Alternatively, to make sure you apply on time, apply online at www.eadmissions.org.uk from September before the closing date usually in the middle of January.

In the term before your child’s admission is due, you will receive a letter from the Local Authority whether a place is offered and if not, you will be given your statutory right to appeal. If you are offered a place, write, or complete the acceptance/refusal letter provided by the Local Authority within two weeks from the offer date, otherwise you might lose it.
Please note that if your child has a place at Carpenters Nursery, you are not automatically guaranteed a place in reception at Carpenters.

Moving to the school from another primary school - 2019-2020

You will need to apply as soon as possible, online to the Local Authority at http://www.newham.gov.uk/inyear.

If offered a place an appointment will be made to see the Headteacher within two weeks from the offer date. At the meeting bring proof of your child’s date of birth (only passport, birth certificate or NASS document if you are an asylum seeker); and proof of your address (only current Council Tax Bill, Housing Benefit Letter, rent book for council housing or council tenancy agreement and one utility bill.

For Newham Schools where the Local Authority is the Admission Authority (community and voluntary controlled schools)

Starting Primary School - Reception Admission for September 2020
If your child was born between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016, you will need to apply for a reception class place in an infant or primary school for September 2020.

If your child lives in Newham you will need to apply via London Borough of Newham. But if your child lives outside Newham, but you want him or her to go to school in Newham, you will need to apply through the local authority in the borough you live in.

In Year admissions into primary school (aka mid term and mid phase)

If your family arrives in Newham during the school year 2019/2020 and your child needs a school place in the borough you must complete an In Year form and you are usually given a place within 10 days.

The place offered may not be at the school you prefer as that school may not have a suitable place available.

In Year Admissions for September 2019 to August 2020 (Year Groups Reception to Year 6)

Infant to junior school transition

If your child was born between 1 September 2012 and 31 August 2013 and attends an infant school, you will need to apply for a year 3 junior place in an infant or primary school for September 2020. If they attend a primary school NOT an infant school you have the choice of your child staying at their primary school or applying to change to another school. If they are happy in their primary school you do not need to take any action.

If your child lives in Newham you will need to apply via London Borough of Newham. But if your child lives outside Newham, but you want him or her to go to school in Newham, you will need to apply through the local authority in the borough you live in.

Remember, if your child attends an infant school you must apply for a place, even if your child:

- Already attends the infant school linked to your preferred junior school
OR
- They have a brother or sister who attends the junior school

Moving from primary to secondary school in September 2022

If your child was born between 1 September 2010 and 31 August 2011, you will need to apply for a secondary school place for September 2022.
If your child lives in Newham you will need to apply via London Borough of Newham. But if your child lives outside Newham, but you want him or her to go to school in Newham, you will need to apply through the local authority in the borough you live in .

We recommend that the families of all of our year 6 pupils attend as many of the Open Days and Open Evening at the schools across Newham before making a decision what schools to name as a preference.

To maximise your opportunities of getting a place at one of your preferred secondary schools name six schools with at least one being you local school.

Remember, you must apply for a place, even if your child:

Has a brother or sister attending the school;
Lives in the schools priority area for Sarah Bonnell and Chobham Academy
Attends a link school (for Stratford School Academy only)

For Newham Schools where the Local Authority is the Admission Authority (community and voluntary controlled schools)

Fair Access
The law requires that each local authority must have a Fair Access Protocol (FAP), agreed with the majority of schools in its area to ensure that for In Year admissions unplaced children, especially the most vulnerable, are offered a place at a suitable school as quickly as possible.
In agreeing a protocol, the local authority must ensure that no school - including those with available places - is asked to take a disproportionate number of children who have been excluded from other schools, or who have challenging behaviour. Carpenters Primary School has signed up to the LB Newham’s Fair Access Protocol.

Determined Admission Arrangements - September 2022

The law requires that all schools must have admission arrangements that clearly set out how children will be admitted, including the criteria that will be applied if there are more applications than places at the school. Admission arrangements are determined by admission authorities.

All admission authorities must determine (i.e. formally agree) admission arrangements annually, even if they have not changed from previous years and a consultation has not been required. Admission authorities must determine admission arrangements for entry in September 2022, by 28 February 2021. The LB Newham is the admission authority for all maintained schools located in Newham with the exception of the faith schools who are their own admission authorities. Carpenters Primary School is a LB Newham maintained school meaning we must use their admission arrangements.

For any proposed changes to the existing determined arrangements a formal consultation must take place and must be for a minimum of 6 weeks and must take place between 1 October and 31 January of the school year before those arrangements are to apply.

For example: for arrangements which are to apply to applications in 2021 (entry in September 2022), consultation must be completed by 31 January 2021. This consultation period allows parents, other schools, religious authorities and the local community to raise any concerns about proposed arrangements. We did not propose any changes for 2022 as our changes were made and consulted upon for entry in September 2021

Determined Arrangements for the school year starting in September 2022

You can be object to these arrangements or the arrangements of any school by referring to the Office of the Schools Adjudicator. Objections to admission arrangements for entry in September 2022 must be referred to the Adjudicator by 15 May 2021. Any decision of the Adjudicator must be acted on by the admission authority and admission arrangements amended accordingly.
