History
At Carpenters Primary School we aim to stimulate children’s love and curiosity to allow them to develop a coherent, chronological understanding of Britain’s past - alongside that of the wider world.
The History programme of study is delivered through the schools ‘topic’ curriculum; whereby our pupils access all areas of the History National Curriculum through themed topics of study each term. We ensure that there are ample opportunities to revisit, consolidate and make links between previous units of study as the children progress through the school.
Throughout the primary curriculum, we aim to teach the impact of different time periods on our society today. This allows children to understand the complexity of people’s lives in the past through the achievements of significant individuals, civilisations and empires from the past, which allows them to understand the democratic multicultural society they live in today. Through teaching History, we encourage children to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments and develop perspective and judgment in order to develop the skills of enquiry, analysis, interpretation and problem solving.
The aims of history in our school are:
- To develop an understanding of the history of these islands as a coherent, chronological narrative from the earliest times to the present day explaining how people’s lives have shaped this nation and how Britain has influenced and been influenced by the wider world.
- To develop an understanding of how significant aspects of the wider world such as the Ancient Civilisations of Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome and Islamic Civilisations have influenced Britain.
- To learn about significant figures in time that have shaped and contributed to society.
- To understand methods of historical enquiry thinking critically about the interpretation of the evidence to make historical claims contrasting arguments to how the evidence has been constructed.
- To gain historical perspective by placing their growing knowledge into different contexts through different periods of time to make connections between local, regional, national and international history as well as understand its impact on cultural, economic, military, political and social history.
Through the teaching of History, we also aim to:
Develop Resilience: through analysing a variety of primary and secondary resources that may prove challenging.
Develop Linguistic and Vocabulary Development: Every history lesson starts with the core historical vocabulary which is taught, and consolidated throughout each unit.
Raising Aspirations through Rich Experiences: Every year, each year group will partake in at least one history -focused trip/experience day/workshop. Artefact boxes for every historical era are available in class to enhance children’s understanding of the chosen era.
Encouraging innovation and a creative, research-based mindset: We encourage children to reflect on history, draw conclusions and relate events in the past to modern times.
