At Carpenters Primary School, we believe that Design and Technology is a powerful way for children to express themselves, explore their creativity, and understand the world around them.
Our Design and Technology lessons are designed to inspire curiosity and confidence as children develop key skills in analysing, designing, creating, refining and evaluating. Each term, children study a unit that focuses on either: textiles (inc sewing and joining); mechanisms; structures or food technology. A detailed progression map ensures that key skills such as cutting, joining, strengthening, shaping and measuring are taught progressively and further consolidated and built upon each year.
Through hands-on experiences and thoughtful teaching, pupils learn to experiment with design, while also discovering how things work. Children explore how things move (axles, pulleys and mechanisms) and how designers use these in their work.
We aim to nurture every child’s imagination and empower them to see themselves as designers, valuing their unique ideas and encouraging them to aspire to creativity in all aspects of life.
Cooking and food nutrition is also a key part of our learning in both Design and Technology and science and is taught termly. This ensures that children develop a thorough understanding of where food comes from, food nutrition and how to create nutritious meals and snacks from scratch.
